Kairouan’s emblem is the great mosque. One of the most stunning structures in the entire Maghreb is one of the oldest known and most exquisite mosques. Kairouan is the fourth holiest city in Islam due to its religious stature. You will be impressed by its massive courtyard, lofty minaret, beautifully rendered arcades that enclose a sundial, and tall, ornately carved cedar wood doors. They lead to the prayer facilities, which are framed by several marble columns. This 670-built architectural marvel, whose exterior resembles an adobe fortification, served as an inspiration for subsequent mosques in the Maghreb.

In addition to the modest cells of the “warrior monks” who, while performing their military duties, devoted themselves to prayer and contemplation, the Ribat contains two houses of worship, the largest of which currently holds rare religious treasures and medieval artifacts.
One hundred spiral steps lead to the top of the tower, from which brilliant messages were communicated at night with the towers of the nearby Ribats, and which provides a magnificent view of the city of Monastir as well as its sea.
